History

String art refers to a novel type of design that became popular in the 1960s. String arts origin is mathematics. One can design an endless variety of string art works.

Several brilliant minds developed string art. Everest Boole was one of the first. Boole was an Englishwoman who lived from 1832 to 1916. Women weren’t considered to be that smart during those times. However, Boole excelled in mathematics and became an innovative teacher. In fact, she was the first to suggest that string art can be used to teach math to children. Boole herself used it to teach geometry. With string art, it was possible to make lines with curves.

Strung by Shawna

Shawna began her business in 2015 after her children were grown and she’s been making the mini DIY kits since 2018. Each design is unique. In other words, Shawna begins the design of the mini string art kits in her sketchbook before taking them to the computer to create a formal pattern. After Shawna has fine tuned her sample, she develops a recipe card as well as a step-by-step instruction sheet. All materials are pulled by hand, the wood is cut and stained in her wood shop and the kits are hand assembled in her studio. If you live in Canton Ohio, contact Strung by Shawna for in person classes or team building experiences.
