shopping local
I’ve always done my best to shop local but I found it more difficult when I moved to Los Angeles (2015). I started grad school and I didn’t have time to find my new favorite local spots. I started shopping at Amazon while simultaneously studying macro social work. Completing research projects about reducing economic inequality (one of the Grand Challenges of Social Work) while at the same time supporting Jeff Bezos felt kind of terrible.
Covid-19
In May 2020, while watching countless small businesses close due to Covid restrictions, I decided enough was enough. I had to stop supporting Amazon and vote with my dollars. Without a second thought I canceled my Prime membership and I stopped shopping at Whole Foods/365. Then I immediately realized that I still wanted/needed to shop from the comfort and safety of my own home.
the story
So.. this is the Ethical Essentials L.A. (EELA) Story. I opened Ethical Essentials L.A. (EELA) to provide more opportunities for consumers to support small businesses without leaving the comfort and safety of their home. I research the small business owners/crafts people who make EELA’s products using multiple sources. In addition, every order comes with a fabulous little zine called “How to Resist Amazon and Why” by small bookstore owner Danny Caine.
Free is a good price
I wrote this assuming the reader already knows why they should cancel Amazon. I’m not going to get into that here, so if this is the case, send me an email with your snail mail address (info@ethicalessentialsla.com). I’ll send you a copy of the “How to Resist Amazon and Why” zine without an EELA order. Education is at the top of my priorities list, right next to #cancelamazon.
